Born To Be Wild
Born To Be Wild.
I’ve always learned best outdoors. Something about the wilderness just made sense to me. It is a place of solitude, yet teeming with more life than we can ever comprehend. It is spontaneous and exciting, yet strangely methodical.
I grew up in rural Virginia on the most perfect chunk of country ever seen. It was paradise for a kid (my parents had 8 kids, 5 boys and 3 girls). It included a lake, dense woods, green fields, and no neighbors in sight. We grew up with horses, sheep, goats, chickens, and dogs of all sizes.
I spent hours outdoors, creating entire worlds in my imagination. The forest was pure magic, and adventure could be found around every bend in the creek. This love of nature translated to my adult years, inspiring countless hikes, backpacking trips, and eventually my career choice as a Wildlife Biologist.
Even at a young age I realized that skills could be gained from the careful observation of nature. This became even more apparent as I spent time studying their behavior and ability to thrive in extremely punishing conditions. I believe the more we can learn about the natural world, and immerse ourselves in it, the more grounded we become. Creatures in the wild are forged for survival by instincts passed down for generations. Humans have these same instincts, we just have to turn off the TV long enough to hear the call.
